The term Prophet certainly isn't limited to making predictions, quite true. You might find this commentary on Deuteronomy 18 interesting..
"Pulpit Commentary
"A Prophet. The Hebrew word so rendered (נָבִיא) is a derivative from a verb (נָבָא), which signifies to tell, to announce; hence the primary concept of the word is that of announcer, or forth-speaker; and to this the word "prophet" (Greek προφήτης from πρόφημι, I speak before or in place of) closely corresponds; the prophet is one who speaks in the place of God, who conveys God's word to men, who is an interpreter of God to men. (As illustrative of the meaning of the word, cf. Exodus 7:1; Exodus 4:16.)
Hence Abraham is called a prophet ( Genesis 20:7), and the term is applied to the patriarchs generally (Psalm105:15); God conveyed his mind to them, and they spoke it forth to others. "

Theists, why does God allow suffering..
by The Quiet One in..specifically, the suffering of animals.
you can talk about free will/sin/people choosing to not listen to god etc to explain human suffering being allowed.. but how can you love a god that allows animals, that haven't sinned or chosen to not have anything to do with god, to have their short lives ended in often long, drawn out, painful ways.
i could list stories i've read that would probably make you feel ill, but i'm not looking to shock anyone or start an emotional debate.

Artificial Blood Is Patient-Ready
by cantleave inhttp://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleno/39718/title/artificial-blood-is-patient-ready/.
a new source of blood could be just around the corner: red blood cells grown from fibroblasts that have been reprogrammed into mature red blood cells in the lab.
the blood, developed by researchers at the university of edinburgh and the scottish national blood transfusion service (snbts), would be type o negative, also known as universal donor blood, which currently comprises just 7 percent of the blood donor pool.. we have made red blood cells that are fit to go in a persons body, project leader marc turner, medical director at snbts, told forbes.

"Watchtower1989 January 1 p.12
"He was laying a foundation for a work that would be completed in our 20th century."
(The 1989 Watchtower used the term "in our 20th century" in the magazine, but this was changed to "in our day" for the bound volume and the CD ROM library). "

One step closer to a possible JW blood transfusion solution
by sir82 insee the article here:.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/04/18/the_wellcome_trust_is_funding_research_to_make_human_blood_from_stem_cells.html.
blood could become much less scarce if a british research group succeeds in bringing a version made from stem cells to human trials, and eventually to market.

The Searcher said: "Why does God allow suffering? The answer is found by examining why he allowed his own son to suffer and die!".. That doesn't answer everything.http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/bible/222352/1/Theists-why-does-God-allow-suffering

"All because YHWH couldn't just selectively kill the bad people...."
Exactly.. Just think of Isaiah 37:36, from this weeks book study. And that was just one angel..
